The final flowering of the Medieval Fiddle, the Lira da Braccio lasted well into the seventeenth century. It has seven strings, the lowest two are off the fingerboard and act as drones. There are several surviving examples and it appears in a number of paintings from the era. Peghead, neck and sides are carved out of solid pine, with laminate top and back, hardwood fingerboard, bridge and tailpiece, and comes with a period bow.
